Self-Cleaning Overhead Suspension Magnets

Self-cleaning overhead suspension magnets reliably extract even coarse iron.

The fields of application for overhead suspension magnets extend from the generation of clean iron products to machine protection.

STEINERT overhead suspension magnets have been recovering iron and ferrous components from bulk material for many decades. They not only generate clean iron scrap for recycling but also protect crushers, mills and other mining processing equipment against wear and destruction.
They therefore remove unwanted ferrous parts such as screws, nuts and rock bolts from coal, coke, ore and other minerals – and they do this at very high belt speeds, over large working distances up to 1 m and during aggregate material transport.

The operating principle is based on a deep-reaching magnetic field using either permanent magnets or electromagnetic coils. An overhead suspension magnet is arranged above a feeding conveyor belt and extracts the ferromagnetic materials from the supply flow against the force of gravity. Self-cleaning magnetic separators have a circulating conveyor belt equipped with projections which removes the ferrous parts attracted by the magnets and allows them to fall into a separate container.

Overhead suspension magnets can be arranged either laterally above or even along the supply flow. Longitudinal arrangement above the container in the supply direction is advisable for the best separating result, since here the material is loosened and available in free flow. An overhead suspension magnet positioned laterally to the supply flow requires a larger magnetic force to achieve the same sorting result due to the greater distance and the material's rest position. In this respect, the advantage of this arrangement is its lower space requirement.

Overhead suspension magnets with a manual removal device can be used where there is a low mass proportion of coarse ferrous parts. Self-cleaning overhead suspension magnets in contrast ensure efficient processes where there is an increased iron proportion in the supply flow.

Overhead and manual overhead suspension magnets are available according to size, application area and ambient conditions as a dry installation with active or passive air cooling or with active or passive oil cooling.

  • Selective separation of iron and generation of a high product purity
  • Self-cleaning of the magnets via circulating conveyor belt
  • Extraction operation
  • Grain size: 10 – 300 mm
  • Layer height up to 1 m

Continuous magnetic separation even under extreme environmental conditions with the STEINERT OHSM

This overhead suspension magnet with oil cooling meets the highest demands on a continuous sorter.

Electromagnetic STEINERT OHSM overhead suspension magnets are used to remove tramp iron efficiently and effectively in extreme deployment conditions, primarily in mining. These manual overhead suspension magnets are either attached longitudinally above a head pulley in the supply direction or laterally at a fixed working distance above the supply flow. The magnetic separator is equipped with a circulating belt that ensures continuous removal of the extracted ferrous parts. Uninterrupted sorting is possible when equipped with this self-cleaning functionality.

The worldwide processing of ores and coal requires the effective removal of tramp iron like screws or bars at very high throughputs. Electromagnets from STEINERT are characterised by their extremely strong and extensive magnetic fields. The pronounced depth effectiveness of our electromagnets means that tramp iron can be reliably collected even from deep layer thicknesses. These magnets have proven themselves for decades even at high belt speeds and large belt widths. The special design of the STEINERT OHSM using coils made of anodised ANOFOL® aluminium strip and an oil filling provides consistent and efficient cooling, thus reducing the risk of a burnt coil. Our special coil design also results in a maximum number of windings with a simultaneously compact design. An external expansion vessel is not required for the cooling liquid.

Passive cooling may be sufficient for smaller sizes as needed, whilst we equip your large series with an active cooling system. This active cooling using heat exchangers enables a performance increase of up to 15%.

The conventional rectifier has been replaced in the high performance magnets series by the "MagDrive" controller that we developed jointly with ABB. Using ABB DC drives enables significant reductions in the time taken to switch the electromagnets on and off.

The electric overhead suspension magnets can optionally also be operated with metal detectors, so that the magnet is only switched on when required and the power is further increased using excessive excitation. The self-cleaning STEINERT OHSM units are available with working widths from 750 mm to 3,000 mm and working distances of up to 900 mm.

  • OHSM = overhead suspension magnet
  • Self-cleaning for continuous sorting operation
  • Active or passive oil cooling for extreme ambient conditions
  • Working widths up to 3,000 mm
